Day One vs Pensio: what each journal's AI may do
Day One is a beautifully designed journal you can hold: native apps on every Apple device, and a printed book at the end of the year. Since 2026 it has AI too. The question is no longer whether a journal has AI — it is what that AI is allowed to do with what you wrote, and whether you can see what it read.

Why Pensio
Read-only, and not as a promise
Day One's assistant can create and edit entries. Pensio's cannot — a connection that could write is a row the database will not store. It is a constraint, not a setting, and not a description of how it behaves.
You choose how much it sees
Three levels, picked when you connect: totals and trends only, short excerpts, or full entries. It applies to every answer, not just the first — and your private notes about other people never cross at any of them.
It works where you already are
Day One's assistant connection runs on a Mac, through its desktop app. Pensio's is an address you paste into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Visual Studio Code — so it answers on your phone, on someone else's laptop, anywhere you are signed in.
The Verdict
Both are good journals with AI in them, and the honest split is about what the AI is allowed to do. Choose Day One for the printed book, the Apple Watch, and an assistant that can write entries for you. Choose Pensio if you would rather the assistant could never write anything — if you want to pick how much of your writing it sees, see how much it has read, and stop it in one click.
